How leverage works, and why risk control matters
Leverage lets you open a bigger position than your deposit. It multiplies gains and losses equally, so it must be used with a stop loss and a clear risk limit. Available leverage depends on the instrument and on XTB’s rules for your account; our team explains yours before you trade.
At 1:20 leverage, a $1,000 margin opens a $20,000 position. If price moves 1% in your favour you make about $200; if it moves 1% against you, you lose about $200, which is 20% of your margin. This is an illustration only, not the leverage available on your account.
